Wallcovering is available in many materials (paint, wallpaper, tiles ...) and almost infinite colors and textures depending on the style of your room but also your taste in decoration and your budget. However, be aware that there are mistakes to avoid in order to obtain an optimal result. Here are some tips for choosing and applying your wallcovering.
To think that you cannot paint wallpaper is a mistake
If you have wallpaper and you do not want to peel it off to change the coating, know that you can completely paint directly on the wallpaper. For this, the latter must be in very good condition. If the color you want to apply is clear, you may need to peel off the paper. In all cases, it will be necessary to apply several thin layers of paint for a perfect result.
Do not paint in too bright color if you are a tenant
You can completely modify the wall coverings of your apartment if you are a tenant. However, check that your lease does not state that this is prohibited. To avoid any problem when you leave the accommodation, we will opt for fairly neutral colors that will appeal to the greatest number. If you want to paint a wall in red, this may be more problematic than if you paint in cream. Likewise, if you are installing wallpaper, avoid exuberant patterns.
Do not use gloss paint if your walls are not smooth
If you choose a glossy or satin paint, know that your walls must be impeccable! Otherwise, you run into disaster ... Indeed, this type of paint will bring out all the imperfections of the wall. On the other hand, it will have the advantage of reflecting the light of the room and will allow it to be enlarged visually. It's up to you to take a good look at whether your walls have visible defects or not. Remember to sand them if the imperfections are too present.
Don't forget to prepare the surface
Even if your walls appear to be in good condition, be aware that the preparation of the walls cannot be neglected. If your walls are in good condition, consider washing the surface to dust and clean it. In this way, the paint will adhere much better to the surface.
If you notice cracks, opt for a filler. You can also use a smoothing coating, which you can find in specialized stores, if your surface has imperfections. But for these two steps, it is in your interest to call in a professional.
