Guarantor of an unmistakable aesthetic, the wooden worktop is popular for dressing our kitchens. But like any self-respecting material, it requires our attention to reveal its charm in due form, because who says wood says natural material and therefore adequate protection.

Oil your wooden worktop: the equipment you need

Do not panic, oiling a work plan does not require you to be an expert at work! On the other hand, a list of suitable equipment will avoid surprises in addition to guaranteeing an ideal result. * Oil: choose colorless and vegetable to preserve the original appearance of the wood and not to grease the surface. To obtain a matt surface, it is preferable to buy an oil specialized in the trade. Conversely, to have shine, linseed oil is ideal. Olive oil may be suitable, but it is more difficult to spread it evenly and not everyone likes its singular odor. * Brushes: we choose flat and two different sizes, they will tackle a large area like small corners. * One (or two) container (s): they provide the right dose of liquid to limit the pâtés. We prefer large containers with low rims of the same type as paint containers. * Fine-grained sandpaper: perfect for finishing wood, the sandpaper should be between 150 and 220 - ideally 180. * A clean cloth and a sponge: to shine between each step. * And finally, a suit of light adapted: if you are a little clumsy, it is better to plan the old Sunday clothes to avoid the puzzle of oil stains.

Your work plan has only to be well kept! You are going to refurbish it!

Preparation of the work plan before applying the oil

Nothing's easier ! This involves thoroughly cleaning the surface of the kitchen worktop so that it properly receives the cleaning products. It is lightly sanded with fine-grained sandpaper - in the direction of the wood, before removing any roughness and excess using a damp sponge. During this operation, it is important to limit the activities around the work surface to avoid, for example, splashes of water or other liquid products on the wood. This device also makes it possible to erase old stains if your surface is not recent. For raw wood, the sanding time will simply be longer than for a surface already treated before. The goal is to obtain a work plan with the least roughness possible, to remove potential splinters and other wood waste.

Your pretty wooden worktop deserves to be treated well!

Preparing the wood for your work plan

Optional but very effective, the primer is a product that is spread over the entire surface of the work surface before applying the oil. It is placed on the work surface using a brush before wiping off the excess after 15 minutes of installation. It is generally composed of biodegradable vegetable solvents which prepare and protect the wood in depth. Its use is therefore recommended although it involves an additional drying time between the preparation of the wood and the oil stage. The impregnation primer is found in all DIY stores, it stabilizes wood subject to humidity and can be used for kitchen worktops as for those of a bathroom - an asset which facilitates the wood maintenance! Not to be neglected to obtain a healthy and durable surface. It also removes a second layer of oil 24 hours after the first application.

Properly cared for, your work plan will last longer.

Applying oil to the work surface

Final stretch with the application of oil on the worktop! We equip ourselves with a clean container, a large brush - and a finer for the clumsy, before rolling up our sleeves. For a homogeneous result, pour the liquid into a container with low rims to avoid overflowing and to be able to dose what you apply. As with the impregnation primer, the oil is applied in the direction of the wood, sparingly. Whatever the type of wood, the application is identical. 10 to 20 minutes are necessary for optimal penetration. Then wipe with a clean cloth to speed up the process and remove excess oil. No question of skipping the step of the cloth which ensures a result without false note, otherwise you will get irregular and sticky areas at the ends of the plan. 24 hours later, your wooden worktop is ready to accommodate your best recipes!

Your work plan is ready!
